Hot Chocolate

M. Elena Navedo (MS1) & her mom

Getting the cornstarch in at the right temperature really is the crux of this recipe. I’ve attempted this many times without a recipe and ended up with clumps of cornstarch. But if you follow this recipe and pay mind to not add the cornstarch to boiling water, you should be fine and it’s worth it!

Ingredients

1 cup of water

½ cup cocoa powder

½ cup brown sugar

1 tsp cinnamon

1 can evaporated milk

½ cup cornstarch

Directions

  • Start boiling the water. Add cocoa powder, brown sugar, cinnamon. Bring to a boil but do not scorch.

  • Once the above mixture has come to a boil and completely dissolved into the water, add evaporated milk. Fill the evaporated milk can with water and add to the pot. Repeat once more.

  • Before the mixture boils again, take 1 cup of the mixture out of the pot and add 1/2 a cup of cornstarch.

  • Add this back into the pot. Stir continuously until the whole pot of mixture boils.

  • Optional: Add 1 tbsp of salted butter and / or 1 tsp of almond extract.

  • Serve warm. Enjoy!
