My Mom’s recipe—a simple version of the baklava taste. Simple, sweet, and a favorite.
Ingredients
Syrup
½ cup sugar
1 cup honey
¾ cp water
¾ teaspoons lemon juice
Cake
¾ cup butter
¼ teaspoon salt
¾ cup sugar
½ teaspoon cinnamon
3 eggs
¼ cup milk
1 cup flour, sifted
½ teaspoon grated orange rind
1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
1 cup walnuts
Directions
Syrup
Mix sugar, honey and water in a saucepan and simmer for 5 minutes.
Skim and add lemon juice.
Boil for another 2 minutes and then cool
Cake
Preheat oven at 350 degrees
Cream butter and sugar together.
Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well each time.
Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and cinnamon. Add to batter.
Stir in milk and orange rind.
Mix well and stir in nuts.
Pour into a greased and floured 8 X 8 X 2 inch pan.
Bake in the oven for 30 minutes or until done.
Remove from the oven and cut into diamond shapes in the pan while still hot.
Pour syrup over cake, refrigerate and let soak until ready to serve. A dollop of whipped cream may be added when serving.
