M. Elena Navedo with the keynote speaker for the event: Dr. Larissa Avilés-Santa.
M. Elena Navedo, co-President of UConn LMSA, was a panelist in this past LMSA Northeast Regional Conference at Albert Einstein School of Medicine, Bronx, NY. She describes her experience below:
I participated in the LMSA NE regional conference at Albert Einstein Medical School in the Bronx. These conferences are for med and pre-med students and serve as an excellent opportunity to learn more about current efforts to improve the health of Latino popoulations, network with other medical students, pre-med students, and faculty, and also as a chance to "recharge the batteries". Medical school is a very rewarding experience, but it is not easy and having a chance to connect with others in similar positions and with mentors who have made it through and are successful is a great way to be reminded of the bird's eye view of this whole process.
I was on a panel designed for pre-med students called "Pathways to Medicine" where I discussed my non-traditional path to medicine as a jazz musician and high school Spanish teacher in Detroit. It is easy in medical school to constantly focus on what I need to learn still. I really enjoyed this experience because it gave me an opportunity to give back to my LMSA community and support the next group of physicians.
Sincerely,
Elena
